Questions and answers

Domain names play an important but often underestimated role in companies and public institutions.

They form the digital identity of the organisation in internal and external presentation and communication and, as an integral part of the IT infrastructure, perform essential tasks in data processing and system-relevant processes.

The associated risks can be far-reaching and, in individual cases, threaten the existence of the organisation. Domains should therefore be treated as intangible assets and given special attention. Due to their importance, they must not be omitted from any risk assessment or evaluation of the information security to be guaranteed.

What is domain security?

Domain security encompasses all technical and non-technical measures that ensure the security of domain names and the associated systems. The focus here is on three central protection goals:

  • Confidentiality: Only authorised persons may access certain data and information.
  • Integrity: Data integrity ensures that data remains complete, correct and unchanged - both during storage and transmission. Manipulation or unintentional changes must be recognised and prevented.
  • Availability: Systems and services should be protected against outages to ensure continuous accessibility.

In an increasingly digitalised world and in the face of growing cyber threats, IT security is an essential task for every organisation.

To protect domain security, cross-system measures are implemented that are regularly checked and monitored for their effectiveness.

Security vulnerability domains

Every year, billions of euros worth of damage is caused by the misuse of domains and emails.

2.4 billion

USD through CEO fraud, in 2021 alone. This type of business email compromise involves "stealing" the identities of top management and manipulating authorised employees in order to transfer large sums of money to the fraudsters' accounts. The trail of irretrievable money is lost abroad, as is that of the attackers.

25 bn.

EUR damage caused by ransomware, The trend is still rising. Attackers usually use emails to spread their malware. All it takes is one user to click on one of these malicious links and the unstoppable process takes its course: data is stolen, data carriers are encrypted and the company is blackmailed into paying large sums of money.

62 million

domains are occupied by cybersquatters, i.e. 25% of all existing domains! Unauthorised third parties occupy identical or similar domain names of protected names, e.g. trademarks, to which they are not entitled. The aim is to monetise existing traffic, to sell the domain to the rights holder at an inflated price or to harm the rights holder and visitors in some other way.

853 Gbps

DDoS attacks are on the rise, quality and quantity are increasing. Targeted attacks using millions of requests at the same time cause systems to fail completely. Loss of revenue, reputational damage or even blackmail by the attackers are the result. If parts of the DNS are attacked, all affected domains are at risk of failing.
